salmon avocado sushi

The first ten times I tried sushi? HATED it.

Sushi has to be one the most polarizing foods ever. You either love it or you hate it. If you asked me anytime in my life up until a year ago, I would have stood firmly with team HATE.

As in, now you can find me craving sushi every day of my life. Somewhere along the line, that happened. And it led me to where I am today: trying to make my own sushi at home.

It sounds a little crazy, I know. I was super intimidated…but I  think it turned out to be a resounding success!

My go-to is a salmon + avocado + cucumber roll with brown rice.

The way I made this sushi rice was probably completely un-authentic. But that’s fine with me.

I got myself a nifty little sushi roller mat! Lay your nori (seaweed) right on top and spread with some rice.

Layer on the goods!

Rolled up and ready to slice!

No clue how I made this happen, but I did. Totally legit sushi rolls, in my very own kitchen.

The moral of the story: this is so easy! I dare you to try.

Brown Sushi Rice

1 cup brown rice
1 and 3/4 cup water
1/4 cup rice vinegar
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1/2 tablespoon salt

Make the brown rice in a rice cooker with the water.

Mix 1/4 cup of rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1/2 tablespoon of salt. Microwave 30 seconds and stir until the sugar and salt have dissolved.

Once the rice is done cooking, flavor it with the vinegar mixture

Avocado, sliced into matchsticks
Cucumber, sliced into matchsticks
Bamboo mat

This is pretty self-explanatory and there are plenty of sushi roll 101 tutorials on the interwebs. There is definitely a learning curve…my first roll looked awful and was falling apart with every slice! Just roll tightly, keep practicing, have fun, and enjoy with wasabi and soy sauce!

I’m on a roll!

Wow they look great. I haven’t tried sushi with brown rice. Is the texture quite different from usual sushi?

Thank you!! I always get brown rice because it’s a healthier (whole grain!) choice than white. It feels a little more hearty and wholesome to me, which I think tastes great!

  3. Sushi is one of the few foods that I don’t like. Not sure why because I’ll eat just about anything ever grown or made!
